Duke of Edinburgh Award Training

Vacancies sometimes occur for young persons between the age of 16 and 18 years to fulfil one of the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme by helping Section Leaders on meeting nights. To do this the person concerned must be accepted by a Section Leader and be either an Explorer Scout or register as a Young leader. Both Explorer Scouts and Young leaders must undergo initial training. As a Young leader the Scout Association annual capitation fee (currently £49.50) needs to be paid. Our Scout Group Executive have agreed to pay this amount for each Young Leader that supports us. They are expected to remain with us for at least 3 months.

Parental Support

The Group welcomes all support that parents can offer and would be delighted to hear from anyone wishing to become a leader or regular lay-helper (section assistant). Parents are expected to support the Group Leader in which their child is a member once a term. Groups 'run' a rota or online system where parents are expected to sign up in advance. Notwithstanding this, leaders will ask for additional help, for example for outside trips where an extra degree of supervision is required or when extra transport is needed if our Group minibus is over-subscribed. (Occasional help of this kind does not require a DBS check). It is hoped that parents will volunteer their services in these circumstances.

Uniform

Parents are expected to purchase the appropriate uniform clothing and Group neckerchief (red/green halves) for their son/daughter. These can be obtained from SGS Outdoors (Scout Shop), 60 Trippett Lane, Sheffield, or on-line from www.sgs-outdoors.co.uk The Group provides all badges free of charge, at appropriate times.
